
Black Neon Tetra
A nice addition to the tropical community tank is the Black Neon Tetra.
Originating in South America, where they inhabit Paraguay and Southern Brazil in the Paraguay, Rio Taquari, Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul river systems, they are a schooling fish that hang out around plants and driftwood.
In the home aquarium, Black Neon Tetras like plenty of cover and do really well in a planted aquarium. They do little damage to plants and should be considered for such a setup.
PH should be kept between 6.0 to 7.0 however these fish do well with a standard neutral PH, allowing many other tropical specimens to co-exist in the same environment.
Black Neon Tetras are a schooling fish and should be kept in a group of at least 6 for them to feel safe. They look terrific the way the swim around in a group -it is very pleasing to the eye.
It is not that hard to tell the difference between males and females. Females will be a lot plumper and rounder in the body due to their bellies being full with eggs. Black neon's are egg
layers and will lay their eggs in a scattered formation, laying them on leaves glass and rocks in the aquarium. Parents should be removed from the tank after they laid the eggs as the adults will eat the eggs and fry.
These fish are not recommended to be kept with larger more aggressive fish such as Angelfish as they will most probably be consumed.
