Female Zebra Danio

Originating from East India, the colourful Danio is a fine addition to the tropical tank, even mild cold water tanks.

The Danio comes in several varieties such as Zebra, Giant, Leopard, Long-finned, Golden Leopard, Pearl, Metallic Blue Zebra & Metallic Pink Zebra. Recently a new species has been found and is yet to be scientifically named.

Danios are a medium-sized aquarium fish, growing to a maximum of 6cm. They are hardy and extremely easy to care for.

Danio's are egg scatterers. It is thought in the wild they are annual fish but will live up to 3-5 years in a tropical aquarium if well cared for.

This very colourful fish predominantly features horizontal markings but some specimens feature vertical markings.

Danio's are hearty eaters and are commonly one of the first to respond to feeding in the aquarium. Being an omnivore, they will eat a variety of foods including flake food, frozen food, live food and plant matter.

Danio's will visit all levels of the aquarium but are mostly found in the top third of the tank.

Females can be identified not by markings, but by size. The female's body is generally larger than the male and the female features a fuller, deeper looking body.

They are a peaceful fish, but have been known to rarely nip fins of community tank mates.

In the home aquarium, it is good practice to offer Danio's a variety of food - particularily when conditioning females for spawning, where plenty of live food should be used.
