The Red Cap Oranda Goldfish is a popular variety of the Oranda Goldfish suitable for indoor aquariums.
Red Cap Orandas feature a white body colour with a raised red “cap” on the top of the head is called a “wen.” They feature shimmering scales, and a long flowing split caudal (tail) fin that fans out when it stops swimming. All of their fins are paired except the dorsal fin, and the tail fin is split.
The wen will start to show when the fish are about 3 – 4 months old, but it really begins to form up at about 1 – 2 years and will be completely developed in 2 – 3 years.
The Red Cap Oranda Goldfish are very popular amongst cold water aquarists, but they are considered delicate and not recommended as a beginner fish. Nitrates should be kept low and PH should be around 7.5.
The wen is subject to infection resulting from poor water quality and they also do not tolerate very cold water very well, as part of your tank setup you may consider including an aquarium heater and keep the temperature between 18-24C.
